Sand minerals are known as heavy minerals because of their high specific gravity. They mainly lay in the deep sea in the form of rocks, and because of the continuous wave motion the particles of these rocks are washed off from the sea and get settled on the sea shores as placer deposits because they are chemically resistant to weathering. The light weight minerals are washed off back in the sea. These minerals are mostly silicate minerals.
India has been endowed with some of the richest minerals such as titanium ores. India has a beach coastline of about 6000 kilometers.
The minerals are washed off only at sea shores where a particular kind of rock is present in the sea. And this is possible only in coastal areas where the sea touches land. Not all types of rocks that are washed off at the sea shore are industrially applicable or economically beneficial.
One of the premier companies that indulge in heavy mineral mining is V.V. Mineral. They are India’s biggest mining, manufacturers and exporters of Garnet. They have been awarded as the ‘Number One Garnet Exporters’ of our country. They also undertake Zircon mining, Rutile mining and Ilmenite mining.
