Rich SandIndia has been endowed with some of the richest minerals such as titanium ores. India has a beach coastline of about 6000 kilometers. But not all of it is rich in heavy minerals.

How does one identify which sand is mineral rich? It’s simple, the placer deposits are formed on the surface of the sand itself, and hence, the colour of the sand will be the identification factor. Sand that is greyish black in colour is rich in iron ore minerals such as Rutile and Ilmenite. Sand that is reddish brown is rich in Garnet minerals. Garnet mining is carried out extensively in the Gulf of Mannar in Tamil Nadu, due its abundance in that area. In parts of Kerala and Southern Tamil Nadu, Ilmenite mining is renowned.

The minerals form layers of placer deposits in the sand. These layers can be extracted from the shores and separated using various separation processes.

One of the premier companies that indulge in heavy mineral mining is V.V. Mineral. V.V Mineral is a family grown business started by Mr. S Vaikundarajan, Founder, Chairman & Managing Director, VV Group. Being India’s biggest mining, manufacturers and exporters of Garnet V.V. Mineral has been awarded as the ‘Number One Garnet Exporters’ of our country. Zircon mining, Rutile mining and Ilmenite mining are some of the other mining activities that VV Minerals engage in.
