Ilmenite MiningThe Monazite content in the Beach sands of the Gulf of Mannar is very low. It might contain Thorium from 7.0- 8.5%.

However no private companies that conduct beach Mineral sand mining activity like Ilmenite mining, is permitted to recover the Monazite. Also, the percentage of monazite is very low in the ROM. In addition to that, mining of monazite is very hazardous because of the radiation hazards it may produce.
